My Mom’s Soup
Posted by spunky | Filed under Monkee Do, Monkee Grub
What to do when you have left-over rice in the fridge but no microwave oven? (are we the only household without one? Ellen recently got a toaster so we’re moving along nicely.)

Chicken Bones
3 Potatoes and 3 Carrots (chopped into bite size chunks)
3 Tomato (quartered)
1 Onion (quartered)
1 Clove of garlic
1 small can of mushrooms
Salt to taste
White Pepper (Although I used black, cos we don’t have white..)
First let the chicken bones sit in some hot water, remove the gunk that comes up the the surface and discard water. Add fresh water and start boiling the chicken bones with a clove of garlic. Remove more bit that float to the top if you need to.
Add onions, carrots and potato and let boil. Turn the fire low to simmer and add the can of mushrooms, stock and all. This is something I learned from my mom, she said the ’stock’ that the mushrooms come with gives the soup the extra flavor. Yes it’s full of preservatives but it’s yums!
Tomatoes go in last as they cook really quick, add some salt to taste. Let soup simmer for at least half an hour if you’re in a hurry. I made mine at 2am in the morning, it probably simmered for about an hour or so, turned the heat off and went to bed.
I came home starving after yoga, so I dumped the rice from the fridge into a small pot of soup and lunch is served with some pepper. Don’t forget some chili padi in soy sauce on the side!
Lunch Today – Speedy Butter Rice
Posted by spunky | Filed under Monkee Do, Monkee Grub

Ingredients:
Corn kernals (1 can)
Shitake Mushrooms (diced)
Garlic (sliced)
Imitation crab sticks (5 or 6 sticks)
Olive Oil
BUTTER
Rice
*basically, whatever I can find in the fridge and cupboard*
Cook rice in rice cooker.
Heat up frying pan, melt approximately half tablespoon of butter into some olive oil. Fry the mushrooms till they start to soften, you might have to add more oil as the mushrooms soak up the oil pretty quickly. Add garlic slices, toss around a little and quickly add imitation crabsticks and the can of corn (drain the liquid, please!).
Add another dollop of butter to coat the mixture. When rice is cooked, pour fried ingredients into rice cooker, fold into rice and add a last tablespoon of butter.
I love butter! Butter is the best thing in the world, I love butter so much, I HAVE to go to yoga at least 5 days a week.
I grew up fascinated with imitation crab sticks. When I was a little girl my mom managed to convince me I was eating real crab. It wasn’t long before I saw the word ‘IMITATION’ on the packaging. There’s absolutely NO CRAB in this thing, in fact it’s probably mostly fish. Where do they get the crab flavour from? Hmm.
Blind Spot

“when making a lane change, check your mirrors for a space in traffic where you can enter safely. Check your blind spot by looking over your shoulder in the direction of the lane change. Signal when you want to move left or right. Check again to make sure the way is clear and steer gradually into the new lane, maintaining the same speed or gently increase it.”
Taken from http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/blind.htm
I wish that driver who switched lanes without seeing me coming up, resulting in me having to switch to the next lane on the right at the last minute, paid attention to his blind spot checking. It was fortunate the taxi coming up behind me was quick to slow down.
Yes, I am still in one piece.
Now the checklist grows, vehicles to avoid riding too close to:
Buses
Big motherfucking trucks
Taxis
P-PLATE
Riding in the dirt seems much much safer. Yes there are trees, but at least they don’t move.
