Babysitting

The cutest sisters, EVER!

Their Papa, Hasan is a childhood friend of mine from my Katong days. The whole family was coming to visit Singapore, the last time they were here they only had one child. This time Hasan asked me online if I would babysit TWO of them for a day cos he’s also back here for business and had a meeting to attend. When he sent the above picture I wanted them so badly. Look at how bloody cute they are!

This is Zahara, or Zaza. I met her when she was about 3 years old and I do love those curls in her hair. This is her taking a flower apart at my place. She’s quite a hyper little girl but who wouldn’t fall in love with her?

I know a lot of us girls would kill to have natural lashes like Zaza’s!
Sunday 17th Sept:
The day started pretty alright, Hasan and his wife Anja brought the kids over to get warmed up to me. Roy and Rachel brought Maddy over so it was like a kid’s party at mine for a couple hours. The little one is Zaleah (Zaleha?) and she just turned one. She’s teething and requires a lot more attention that Zaza does. Besides gurgling she can also say her Mom’s name. She probably doesn’t know what she’s saying yet cos she just keeps going ‘An-ya, An-ya!’
I was so sure I’d survive 18th Sept.
Monday 18th Sept :
The couple came to drop the kids off and went to their important meeting. I’m sitting in my living room looking at two adorable kids, a bag full of baby stuff, a stroller, another bag full of coloring books and swimming stuff. I decided I had to bring them over to Roy and Rachel’s to play with Maddy. These two girls had a field day with Maddy’s toys… When I brought them home I put the Nickalodean channel on to keep them occupied.
Leah gets really squirmy and it’s hard to keep her still while trying to talk on the phone. Zaza was pretty entertaining herself and talking to me in broken English and lots of Dutch. By late afternoon Zaza had drawn lots of stuff on her legs with the color markers and I had fed both of them.
Soon it was easy to put Leah down to let her take a nap.

Chaos started when Leah woke up and Zaza decided to slap her for fun.
Lots of crying.
OMG.
I salute mothers, I don’t know how they deal with crying babies.
As much as I was sad to see them go when Hasan and Anja came to pick them up, I was glad I could return these kids. Haha.
I guess I’m not THAT ready for motherhood… yet.
The happy family is now holidaying in Bali.
I want a holidaaaaaay tooooooooo…..
Sunday Evenings

Ingredients:
Wala Wala Pizza of your choice
Wala Wala Short Ribs
DVD Player
TV
Season II of 24 (Ok I know… I suaku lah…)
Couch/The carpet on the floor
I never thought vegging in front of the TV with the one you love could be so… comforting. I’d always been the ‘let’s go out and do something’ person because I convinced myself TV was a waste of time. That could also be just plain jealousy that I get to miss the decent shows due to my working hours.
Once upon a time I depended on the VCR. When I got home from work in the wee hours of the morning I’d catch up on ‘Friends’ and… er… can’t remember now. Which probably explains my permanent dark eye circles.
I still don’t go to bed early. I still have those dark eye circles.
I still love watching telly with you by my side.

Comfort

People find comfort in familiar things.
Food, addictions, exercise and household chores…
For some of you it’s the teddy bear/blanket/pillow that’s been sitting on your bed since you were a lil’ one and yeah you didn’t wash it cos it has a familiar smell.
I don’t judge. Just don’t make me smell it.
Potatoes. Oh yes, potatoes.
French fries, Baked Potatoes, Crisps, mashed.. you name it. Something so good for you but when eaten in excess isn’t quite.
Here’s my simple Wasabi Potato Mash which originally was meant to be a salad but I overcooked the potatoes that one time and now I’ve decided it’s more comforting in a mash.
You will need:
Washed Potatos (use the whole bag la)
Japanese Mayonnaise (they say it’s suitable for 1 – 100yrs …)
Wasabi
Spring Onions/Chives
I personally wish chives wouldn’t be so much more expensive than spring onions in Singapore. Chives also look more atas neater.
Boil potatoes in a big covered pot with some salt. Tune in to The Oprah Winfrey Show while waiting.
For those of you who wish to make it a potato salad instead, remove potatoes from heat when Oprah says ,’When we come back..’ after one drama story. You may cut the potatoes into chunk sizes of your choice.
If you want to get the ultimate mash, when you know there’s 15mins left to the show, turn off the heat and let the potatoes sit in the hot water for 5 minutes as you ponder about why Oprah has strange powers over you on certain days.
Next, remove the potatoes and place them in a colander above the pot. Cover. Go back to Oprah to find out why one of the identical twin girls (her guests) wants a sex change.
When you’re done with Oprah and you agree with one of the guests (who was a girl girl lesbian and later had a sex change and now sports a beard) that you can BUY a penis (prosthetics or dildo) instead of going for an Addadicktomy, place the potatoes in a big plastic container and use chopsticks to mash them.
Add generous amounts of Japanese Mayonnaise and wasabi to taste. If you wish to burn your nostrils then add more wasabi lor.
Fold in spring onions or chives.
When eaten hot, the confort level of this simple dish is heightened. Since you used the whole packet of potatoes, you have some to keep in the fridge for sharing/later.
Alright, back to life you go. Shoo!
Kazu

Ok, I’m no food writer.
The yakitori at Kazu (Cuppage Plaza #04-05) is yummmmmmms!
Dinner with my good ol’ bro for his birthday, dinner was arranged by my flatmate, Sharon. She’d been raving about their Foie Gras yakitori. Because of my crazy schedules working on the career, I couldn’t find the time to go eat with her.
After modelling my hair (the only part of my body worth modelling, actually) at Toni&Guy and a long photoshoot with a certain magazine, I was sure I wanted to crash. I wanted to jump into a swimming pool and just float around. I was beginning to wonder if it was a good idea to have arranged dinner after such a day. Hell, it might not sound very tiring to some of you but believe me.. I’m no model, posing is tiring and quite frankly, scary. It was a real eye opener for me, that at my age I’m still uncertain about how to pose for the camera cos I’d rather be BEHIND it.
So.. back to dinner. As soon as the food came, I put a piece of pork rolled with golden mushroom in my mouth. I woke up a little, thanks to the Asahi I was drinking with my brother, and decided I wanted to enjoy dinner to its fullest.
When the foie gras arrived, Sharon said,’This is my HEAVEN!’
I put one in my mouth. Closed my eyes and savoured the flavour.
Ladies and gentlemen, this IS the place to go if you have a craving for foi gras. Cos it’s cheap compared to eating anywhere else. Two fat pieces of foie gras skewered onto a stick costs about $6. How much do you pay at other restuarants?
Other items we had: Pork Belly, Cow tongue, pork with asparagus, chicken heart, chicken innards, bbq fish….. shiok!
Happy Birthday bro, glad we brought you to Kazu.
Spunkymonkee is grateful for Sharon, who is the best flatmate anyone can ask for.
Becoming Spunky
Posted by spunky | Filed under Monkee Bizniz
I’ve been going through some stuff lately that lead me to ask myself, ‘Who is Spunky?’
Is she the one that doesn’t give a damn about what others think and just goes out and does what she does no matter the consequences?
I guess time runs a little faster as you get older. You learn to listen to others, you open yourself to new experiences and new ways of approaching things. You know that the path you chose is the one you tell yourself is right. You know that now there are important people around you that can shape you into what the ultimate goal is.
To inspire others.
The path I chose may have been long. There may have been chances I missed out on.
I choose not to regret.
I choose to take action.
Where there are times I will throw myself into the fire to love someone, there is time now to live my life to the fullest to help others.
I have to help myself before I can help anyone else.
Life is a never ending lesson.
Spunky will take it as it comes.
Don’t ever let them take the Spunky out of the Monkee.
